GALLOWAY, N.J. – It was déjà vu all over again for the TCNJ women's basketball team.
A first-half barrage from long range and relentless defense proved more than enough for a resounding victory, 60-35, at Stockton on Wednesday night as the Lions recreated the first meeting between the teams – nearly down to the point.
Julia Setaro (15 points) and
Nina Branchizio (12) combined to make seven 3-pointers for TCNJ, which led wire-to-wire in completing the season sweep of the Ospreys. The Lions (15-8, 10-6) also took over sole possession of fourth place in the NJAC and can clinch a first-round playoff home game with a win over Ramapo on Saturday.
Just like the first contest, the Lions won by 25 points (59-34 on Jan. 4) and suffocated Stockton into a frigid shooting performance. The Ospreys shot 26.0 percent the first go-round and were even more off on Wednesday, finishing at 22.6 percent (12-of-53) for the night and an ice-cold 16.7 percent (6-for-36) through three quarters.
Setaro started the scoring with a pair of early 3-pointers, and the Lions were off and running as Branchizio splashed two of her own to stake the visitors to a 16-7 lead after one.
Sydney Blum got in on the fun with a triple of her own to push the margin into double digits, and back-to-back deep balls from Setaro and
Isabella Cafaro sent TCNJ into the locker room with a 35-15 advantage.
TCNJ was red-hot in the first half, going 8-for-11 from 3-point range and 12-of-20 overall.
The spread never dipped below 20 in the second half, and it grew as large as 30 on two occasions, first on a layup by
Jezlyn Cross that made it 50-20 with 7:30 to play and again at 60-30 on Cafaro's bucket with 2:51 remaining.
Cafaro and Cross were catalysts off the bench. Cafaro scored a season-high nine points, and Cross made all three of her shots for six.
Setaro finished 5-for-7 overall and made all three of her 3-pointers, while Branchizio was 4-for-6 from deep to help the Lions shoot 53.5 percent for the night (23-for-45) and 60.0 percent from beyond the arc (9-for-15). TCNJ outscored the Ospreys, 26-12, in the paint.
Izzy Leazier took just three shots but managed to score seven points to go with five rebounds and three assists, and Blum tallied five points and five boards.
Morgan Heller, making her first start of the season, dished out five assists to surpass 100 for her career.
The Lions welcome Ramapo to Packer Hall for a Senior Day showdown on Saturday. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
