Matkiwsky Milestone Highlights Men's Tennis Sweep of Haverford

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team put together an impressive sweep of a quality Haverford side on Sunday afternoon, besting the Fords in a litany of tight matches to head into an extended road swing with plenty of momentum.

Nick Matkisky picked up his 50th career win for the Lions (7-1), who brushed aside a Fords squad that is frequently among the best in the highly competitive Centennial Conference.

It was a hotly contested series of doubles tilts that provided a springboard for TCNJ. Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter kicked off the match with an 8-5 victory against Stefan Johnson and Adam Chow on the top court.

The match turned on the number three doubles court, where Jacob Quijano and Alberto Thomas battled back from a 6-4 deficit to force a tiebreaker with Max Beckwith and James McKenzie. The Lions' tandem took the last four points of the breaker to win it, 7-3, and stake the hosts to a 2-0 advantage.

Down 2-0 early, Matkiwsky and partner Akul Telluri broke Justin Minerva and Aiden Kim at 6-7 to seal the sweep and give Matkiwsky the 50th overall win of his career.

Thomas upped the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win against McKenzie at No. 4 singles, and Adrian Tsui was close behind with a clinching 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Johnson on the No. 2 court.

The rest was all icing on the cake for the Lions. Derek Jordan took down Daniel Loder by a 6-3, 6-3 line at No. 5, and Maitland-Carter came back from a break down in the second set to capture a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory opposite Kim at No. 3.

Brett Schuster (No. 6) and Michibata (No. 1) each won in a third-set super breaker to polish off the shutout. Schuster rallied from a set down to edge Minerva 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, and Michibata pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 thriller with Andreas Wingert.

Michibata is now one away from 50 career singles victories, and the doubles win was the 60th of his standout career.

The Lions head to New York next weekend for their NJAC East Division opener at Oneonta and a showdown with nationally ranked RPI.
