EWING, N.J. – Visiting RIT gave the TCNJ men's tennis team all it could handle on the doubles courts, but the Lions emerged with a slim advantage and went on to cruise through all six singles courts to pull away for an 8-1 victory on Sunday.
Matthew Michibata,
Harrison Maitland-Carter, and
Brett Schuster were all double winners for the Lions (4-0), who remained undefeated and capped a 2-0 weekend in style.
The Lions and Tigers (2-6) split the top two doubles courts, with Michibata and Maitland-Carter scoring an 8-4 triumph over Christian Berko and Grahith Movva at No. 1 before RIT's No. 2 team leveled the match.
That left it to No. 3, where Schuster and
Jacob Quijano found themselves locked in a tiebreaker with Brian Bork and Verosh Jayanetti. Schuster and Quijano got the better of the decisive breaker, running away with a 7-2 decision to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.
The individual matches were far less competitive. The Lions won in straight sets on all six courts, and only three sets were tighter than 6-2.
Michibata defeated Movva 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, and
Alberto Thomas gave the Lions a 4-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win opposite Bork at No. 4. Maitland-Carter clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Bull at No. 3.
Adrian Tsui kept his perfect mark intact thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 win against Berko at No. 2.
Schuster capped his 2-0 day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Max Chang at No. 6 before
Derek Jordan completed the match with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Joel Pho on the No. 5 court.
