Setaro Sizzles as Women's Hoops Slips Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Julia Setaro was the main event on Main Line Wednesday night, shooting the TCNJ women's basketball team past Swarthmore, 65-58, in the first contest of the new year.

Setaro poured in a season-high 26 points and needed only 12 shots to do it, making eight of them – including a sizzling 6-of-8 from 3-point range – to help the Lions (7-6) counteract the Garnet's dominance on the offensive glass and wrap up non-conference play with a road win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Setaro drilled three 3-pointers in the first three minutes and change, part of an 11-0 run that staked TCNJ to an early 11-2 lead
  • Swarthmore (5-5) countered with nine in a row to tie the game, but the Lions held the hosts scoreless over the final 4:03 of the first period and ended the frame on a 7-0 run to seize an 18-11 advantage
  • The see-saw battle of runs continued into the second stanza, when Swarthmore ripped off nine points in a row to gain a 22-21 lead
  • The Garnet still led, 29-27, before a bucket by Natalie Kolb pulled the Lions even and an Izzy Leazier 3-pointer gave them the lead for good with 1:26 left in the half. Setaro's fifth trey of the half came with a foul, and the ensuing four-point play made it a seven-point lead before the Garnet got within 36-32 at the break on a late triple
  • The blue and gold led by just two (42-40) in the later stages of the third, but two free throws from Kolb and treys by Leazier and Setaro upped the spread to 51-42 heading into the final frame
  • TCNJ went ahead by double digits (55-44) on Kolb's three-point play with 7:50 to go and pulled away from there, eventually leading by as many as 15 (61-46) before the final buzzer
FOR THE FOES
  • Dana Bandurick had 16 points an eight rebounds and Anna Hansson paired 10 points with 17 rebounds, pulling down nine of the Garnet's 24 offensive rebounds
  • Alyssa Hayashi scored 10 for the Garnet
STANDOUT LIONS
  • Setaro's explosion was her first outing of 20-plus points since November 15, when she scored 24 against Stevens
  • Natalie Kolb had her best game as a Lion, scoring a season-high 13 points and matching Leazier and Kaitlyn Deiter for the team lead with five rebounds. She was 5-for-5 from the foul line and had a pair of steals
  • Leazier finished with 10 points, while Nina Branchizio tallied five points and five assists
  • Behind Setaro, the Lions finished 10-for-22 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range
NOTES
  • Wednesday's meeting was the second all-time between the teams and the first since 2009
  • Setaro passed Alexa Shields '06 for second on the program's all-time 3-pointers list, now with 169 for her career
  • With one 3-pointer, Branchizio joined Setaro as one of five Lions all-time to make 150 triples
  • Swarthmore took 21 more shots than TCNJ (70-49) and committed 10 fewer turnovers (21-11), but shot just 30.0 percent overall (21-of-70) and 27.8 percent from downtown (5-for-18)
