Late Surge Lifts Diplomats Past Baseball

LANCASTER, PA.- The No. 19 ranked TCNJ baseball team dropped a road matchup at Franklin & Marshall by a score of 11-8 on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions (12-3) led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Diplomats (8-12) scored 10 runs in the seventh and eighth to pull off the comeback win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lions found the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth inning with two runs on three hits.
    • The bottom of the lineup stepped up in the fourth as Jack Haynes led things off with a single through the right side. Jack O'Donnell followed this up with an RBI single to right center field to drive in Haynes from first.
    • Brian Lovaglio kept his solid debut-start at DH going with a single through the right side to move O'Donnell to third. Freshman Jake Carter, now in his second collegiate start, plated O'Donnell on a fielder's choice.
  • TCNJ added two more in the fifth, taking a 4-0 lead over the Diplomats.
    • Justin Marcario started off the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line and then stole third. This made it easier for Chris Reeder to knock him in on an RBI single to right field.
    • Following a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Reeder found his way home on a wild pitch to put the Lions ahead by four.
  • Franklin and Marshall got their first run across in the bottom of the sixth on a homer to center field, cutting the TCNJ lead to three.
  • In the seventh, a leadoff homerun to left from Justin Marcario sparked another two-run inning for the Blue & Gold.
    • A sac-fly to left from Ryan Goodall a few batters later scored Reeder, giving TCNJ a five-run lead.
  • After six innings and 98 pitches Jordan Gray handed it over to the bullpen as he gave up one earned run on two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
  • The Diplomats came all the way back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring seven runs on five hits and one error in the field to take an 8-6 lead.
  • Reeder launched an equalizer in the top of the eighth with a homerun to left, scoring him and Mike LaGravenis.
  • F&M retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-clearing three-run double to center field, making the score 11-8.
  • The Lions went down in order in the top of the ninth.
