Baseball Takes Down Top-Seeded Stockton 7-5 in NJAC Opening Round

GALLOWAY, N.J.- The TCNJ baseball team went on the road and beat top-seeded Stockton in the first round of the NJAC tournament on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 7-5. The Lions (22-15) went down three runs early but clawed back and came up with some big hits to take down the Ospreys (22-16).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stockton got out to an early lead in the first inning with three straight two-out hits to take a 3-0 advantage.
  • In the top of the third, Ryan Goodall crushed his fourth homer of the season over the left field fence after a Chris Reeder walk to cut the Stockton lead to a run.
  • The Ospreys brought their lead out to two in the bottom of the fourth on two hits to bring the score to 4-2 after four innings.
  • TCNJ tied it up in the top of the fifth with two runs on two hits.
  • After five innings of work, SP Jordan Gray handed it over to the bullpen to keep the game tied at 4-4.
    • Gray finished his day allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, freshman reliever Jack O'Shea got himself out of a bases-loaded one-out jam with consecutive strikeouts to bring TCNJ back in to hit.
  • The Lions took their first lead in the top of the seventh on a Michael Schumacher single through the left side to bring in Goodall to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of TCNJ.
  • Stockton evened the score in the home half of the seventh on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
  • After a scoreless eighth, TCNJ rallied for two runs in the top half of the ninth inning to take a 7-5 lead.
    • After an error in the field to lead off the inning, O'Donnell moved Goodall over to second with a sac-bunt. Schumacher hit the go-ahead single in the next at-bat with another line-drive to left field.
    • Freshman Andrew Woodward came up with a big two-out single down the right field line to score Schumacher and put the Lions up two.
  • Joe Ferreri was terrific in his two innings of work, earning the win after allowing no runs on one hit, no walks, and a strikeout to push the Lions forward to Friday with a win.
STANDOUT LIONS: UP NEXT:
  • The TCNJ baseball team will take on fourth-seeded Rutgers Camden in the second round of the NJAC tournament on Friday afternoon in Camden starting at 3:30 PM.
