Baseball's Season Ends with Losses to Ramapo and Rowan in NJAC Tournament

CAMDEN, N.J.- The TCNJ baseball season came to a close on Saturday as they fell in matchups with both Ramapo and Rowan. The Lions (23-17) needed a win to advance to Sunday's NJAC Championship, but lost to 6-3 to the Roadrunners (27-14) and 8-3 to the Profs (27-12)

GAME 1: #3 Ramapo 6, #6 TCNJ 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both pitchers got out to hot starts as they totaled seven strikeouts in the first two innings. In the top of the third, Malouf saved a run after a wild pitch, diving in front of the stealing runner at home.
  • The Lions were the first on the board in the bottom of the third as Chris Reeder beat out a double-play, allowing Jack Haynes to cross home.
  • In the top half of the fourth, Ramapo took the lead with three hits including a solo homer to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Lions cut the Roadrunner lead to a run in the sixth on a Jack O'Donnell bunt single down the third-base line, scoring Ryan Goodall. Ramapo cut the Lions inning short by turning a triple-play on a sacrifice fly attempt to right field.
  • Freshman Evan Frank came on to start the fifth and was great in his four innings of relief of Malouf. He allowed just two hits in his relief efforts and put up four straight zeros to keep the Lions in the game down the stretch.
  • In the ninth, Ramapo struck for three runs on a bases clearing double to deep center field, bringing their lead to 6-2.
  • TCNJ put up one more in the bottom of the ninth as Haynes beat out a double-play ball to second, scoring Jack O'Donnell. The Lions couldn't bring three more runs across as the Roadrunners held on for the win.

GAME 2: #5 Rowan 8, TCNJ 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Profs led the game off with a run on a two-out fielding error, going up 1-0 early.
  • The Lions answered back in the bottom half, sparking a two-out rally of their own and knocking in a pair of runs.
  • Following a Reeder single, an error and a walk hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Jack O'Donnell. O'Donnell wore one off the side to bring in Reeder and tie the game at one.
  • Schumacher worked a walk in the next at-bat and score Justin Marcario to put TCNJ ahead 2-1.
  • Rowan took the lead back in the third on two hits and an error for two runs and a 3-2 advantage.
  • Over the next two innings, Rowan held TCNJ scoreless as they continued to separate with four runs on two hits and an error, bringing the score to 7-2.
  • In the sixth, the Lions took a run back on three hits to bring them within four.
    • Mike LaGravenis led off the inning with a double to right center which Andrew Fernandez followed up with a single to move LaGravenis over to third.
    • Chris Reeder shot another single out to right which brought LaGravenis in and the score to 7-3
  • Jack O'Shea came on to pitch in the sixth and did a solid job of holding down the Profs, allowing just one run on three hits and three strikeouts with no walks in three innings.
  • Alec Schwartz sat down Rowan in order with a strikeout in the ninth, but TCNJ couldn't find the comeback as the Profs advanced to the NJAC Championship.
