Women's Soccer Ousted in NJAC Semifinal Shootout

GLASSBORO, N.J. -  The TCNJ women's soccer team left everything on the field in their NJAC Semifinal against second-seeded and 11th-ranked Rowan Tuesday night. But despite becoming just the second team this season to hold the Profs without a goal through regulation – as well as the ensuing overtime – this season, it was the Lions' valiant effort coming up just short in the decisive penalty shootout in which they fell 3-1, bowing out of the tournament and likely bringing their 2025 season to a close.

Ellen Williams was the hero in Tuesday's semifinal, making nine saves in regulation and overtime – including several highlight-reel denials – to force the winner-take-all PK shootout, but a pair of critical misses by TCNJ and one final save by Rowan's Leah Edinger proved too much to overcome in the heartbreaking defeat.

With the majority of the match being spent in the Lions' half, Williams had her number called early and often to the tune of four first-half saves – including one on a penalty kick from Wiedeman that the sophomore turned aside. A more balanced second half in which TCNJ registered three of its four shots on the night saw Williams make just one additional save, bringing her total to five and forcing extra time.

The Lions' tired legs began to show in the opening overtime period – TCNJ entered the contest with two days of rest compared to five for the Profs – but rising to the occasion once again was Williams, who made a pair of miraculous saves in a four-second span as part of a three-save first frame. The sophomore would make her ninth and final save of the night in the waning seconds of the second period to bring the game to penalties, but ran out of magic in the shootout loss.

TCNJ ends its 2025 season with an overall record of 10-4-6, including a 6-1-2 mark in NJAC play, and the program's 12th straight NJAC Semifinal appearance.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rowan held a 22-4 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Profs also drew seven corners to the Lions' two.
  • Abby Najdzinowicz and Ari Keily were the lone TCNJ players to register a shot on goal.
NOTES
  • Williams' nine saves tonight pushed her season total to 71, tying the sophomore for the fourth-most saves in a single season in program history.
  • Alfano sits at 20 career assists after the 2025 season, a mark that is tied for the 14th most in program history.
