BRONX, N.Y. – The TCNJ men's tennis team was swept at NYU on Saturday in a regional dual that was much closer than the final score indicated.
The Lions (4-3) saw their three-match winning streak come to an end, and were highly competitive despite not claiming a point.
Harrison Maitland-Carter and
Asa Wong were convincing winners at No. 1 doubles, and the Violets got the better of three singles matches that went to a third set.
Maitland-Carter and Wong remained just a one-loss duo in duals with a 6-2 victory over Boren Zheng and Philip Martin on the top court, but NYU (5-1) fought back with lopsided wins in the second and third flights to take the doubles point.
The Violets won in straight sets at three, four, and six singles, but the other three went down to the wire.
Maitland-Carter dropped a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision to Zheng on the top court.
Alberto Thomas lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 to Martin at No. 2, and
Olufela Fieulleteau came up on the short end of an epic match at number six singles that went the way of Ryan Shayani by a 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 10-6 score line.
The Lions now have two weeks off before hosting Ithaca on March 29.
