Women's Soccer Falls to #17 NYU in Home Opener

EWING, N.J. - The 20th-ranked TCNJ women's soccer team hosted 17th-ranked NYU in a top-20 matchup on Day 1 of the TCNJ Classic Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to the Violets. The loss is the Lions' first in the regular season since October 18, 2023, ending a 21-game unbeaten streak.

TCNJ (1-1-1) created the first real chance of the afternoon off a corner taken by Ava Visaggio. Classmate Jenny Ward was the first to the ball at the near post, but the sophomore saw her header sail just wide, keeping the game scoreless. NYU (2-1) found itself with its own opportunity just three minutes later, but Sonia Neighbors' shot from point-blank range banged off the post.

A goal by the visitors in the 20th minute put the Violets in front 1-0, but their lead was short-lived as the Lions found a response in Emily Weidner just 13 minutes later.

Winning the ball in the midfield, Caroline Mascone sent a ball into the attacking third that was retrieved by Tiana Ramirez. The senior wasted no time, feeding the ball to a streaking Weidner who took one touch into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

In what turned into an action-packed opening half from there, NYU struck again in the 37th minute to retake the lead only for Taylor Krott and TCNJ to level things again just before the break.

With time winding down in the opening half, Mascone sent a lofted ball into the box toward Krott. The sophomore brought the pass down with a beautiful touch, megging a Violets defender before poking the ball into the corner to send the game into halftime with the score tied at 2-2.

Despite carrying momentum into the second half, it was the Violets scoring just under four minutes in to take the lead for good. Ellen Williams did excellently in goal to keep it a one-score game from there – the sophomore made eight saves in the second frame alone – but another NYU score in the 90th minute put the game out of reach and handed TCNJ the 4-2 loss.
