GALLOWAY, N.J. - The seventh-ranked TCNJ women's soccer team was on the road to play Stockton in its regular-season finaleWednesday night, scoring once in each half in a 2-0 win over the Ospreys. The victory is the eighth straight for the Lions, who earned the No. 2 seed in the NJAC Tournament.
Â
TCNJ (13-1-2, 8-1 NJAC) wasted no time asserting itself in Wednesday's match, firing off four shots – two of which forced saves – in the opening 16 minutes. It wasn't until the 30th minute, however, that
Isabella Vilic came up big with her third goal in two games to put the Lions in front.
Â
Lexi Caruso started the scoring opportunity by getting her head on a Stockton goal kick to keep the ball in the opposing half. Next to head the ball along was
Emily Weidner, with Vilic beating the Ospreys' Tori Vliet to the loose ball before using her left foot to curl her shot into the far corner and give TCNJ a 1-0 lead that would hold until halftime.
Â
Stockton's Vliet and the Lions'
Ellen Williams were both forced to make a save to begin the second half before
Jenny Ward's 13th goal of the season doubled TCNJ's lead in the 64th minute.
Â
The chance once again came from a Stockton goal kick, with
Maddie Nolan winning the initial header before
Lexi Caruso flicked on a pass toward Ward. The junior used her speed to split a pair of Osprey defenders, setting herself up to slot the ball into the bottom corner and give the Lions the 2-0 lead.
Â
Reilyn Carr, Nolan and
Lily Gove all fired shots on goal down the stretch to build the lead further, but Vliet was there to deny them all before the final whistle sealed the 2-0 victory for TCNJ.
