LEBANON, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team gave No. 35 Franklin & Marshall a stiff challenge on Saturday night, but the Lions' upset bid came up a bit shy in a 4-3 defeat at Courtside Racquet Club.
Harrison Maitland-Carter was a double-winner for the Lions (3-2), who fell by a slim 4-3 margin for the second straight Saturday.
After Maitland-Carter and
Asa Wong dispatched Zac Ashtiani and Luke Brodsky, 6-2, in an impressive performance on the top doubles court, the Diplomats managed to secure the doubles point with one-break victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
Nathan Chan came back from a 6-1 first-set loss to take the second set from Samuel Donnelly, 7-5, at No. 3, but Chan was unable to finish off the rally as Donnelly claimed a 10-7 decision in the third-set super.
Maitland-Carter, however, gave TCNJ new life with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Ashtiani at No. 2, and
Alberto Thomas held off Brodksy 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 thriller at No. 1 to level the match.
F&M pulled away for good with straight-set wins at No. 6 and the clincher at No. 4.
Brett Schuster capped the dual with a victory over Nate Arnold in a super tiebreak at No. 5.
