Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Conner Gilson

Bernhardt, Women's Basketball Torch Rutgers-Newark 95-48

NEWARK, N.J. -  The TCNJ women's basketball team could not be contained in its rematch against Rutgers-Newark Saturday afternoon, tying its program record with 17 made 3-pointers in a 95-48 rout of the Scarlet Raiders.

Maddie Bernhardt was the catalyst off the bench in the win, pouring in a game and career-high 33 points – 30 of which came as a part of a second half in which the sophomore outscored the entire Rutgers-Newark roster herself (30-16) – on a red-hot 7-for-11 from beyond the arc. Amanda Baylock also impressed with six triples en route to her 23 points, with Katie Fricker (13) joining the duo in double figures.

Fricker and Baylock set the tone early in Wednesday's contest, combining for TCNJ's (13-9, 12-3 NJAC) first four made buckets – all of which came from beyond the arc – to put the Lions up 12-6. The Scarlet Raiders (2-20, 0-15 NJAC) would respond with an 8-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with less than two minutes to go, but it was Baylock striking again from deep before beating the buzzer with a middy to put TCNJ up 21-20 after one.

Rutgers-Newark stayed close through the opening five minutes of the second, but with the score knotted at 26 it was Izzy Augustine and Baylock bookending an 8-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers to jump back in front 34-26. A layup from Brooke McFadden built the lead to as many as nine before a Scarlet Raiders lay-in on the other end made it a 39-32 game at the half.

Baylock hit her fifth 3-pointer of the night to open the scoring in the second half, but from there it was Bernhardt taking over in one of the most dominant halves in program history. Held to just three points in the first half, the sophomore would score 16 as part of a 24-3 run that spanned the final 5:36 of the third quarter before adding 14 more in the fourth, almost singlehandedly putting the game out of reach in what ended as TCNJ's largest win of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • TCNJ shot 52.9 percent (36-of-68) from the field, 45.9 percent (17-of-37) from beyond the arc and 75 from the free throw line.
  • Rutgers-Newark was held to 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field, 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from deep and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) at the charity stripe.
  • The Lions converted 23 Scarlet Raiders turnovers into 33 points and held a commanding 44-8 edge in bench points thanks in large part to Bernhardt's 33.

  • McFadden corralled a game-high 12 rebounds.
FOR THE FOES
  • Sanaa Brodie posted a team-high 18 points to pair with nine rebounds.
