EWING, N.J. – For the second day in a row, the TCNJ baseball team found itself down a run in the later stages of the game. And once again, the Lions mounted a comeback to win on their home field.
Haverford (6-10) took the lead three separate times in the game, beginning in the second inning where they threatened to run away with the contest early. The Fords scored the first run of the game and proceeded to load the bases with two outs. TCNJ (9-10) reliever
Tyler Perry was able to get the Lions out of the inning, however, as he forced the first batter he faced into an inning-ending groundout. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lions tied the game at a run apiece thanks to
Joe Tammaro's sacrifice fly which drove in
Jake Carter.
Haverford scored twice in the top of the fourth, but the Lions again immediately responded to tie up the contest.
Michael Contiliano led off with a double to the left-field wall, and
Braden Dromboski drove him in a few batters later with a single. Tammaro drew a walk in the next at-bat to load the bases, and another run came in after a balk by the Fords' pitcher.
In the fifth inning, Haverford took the lead for the third and final time for the game, but were held scoreless for the final four innings.
Max Sanchez,
Bodhi Lettieri,
Brady Reardon, and
Jalen Maharaja each tossed a scoreless inning for TCNJ to set the stage for a comeback.
The Lions' offense capitalized on the solid pitching, rattling off three unanswered runs for the come-from-behind win. TCNJ entered the bottom of the seventh down 3-4, and
Jesse Beer began the frame with a walk.
Jack O'Donnell then singled to center to put runners on the corners, and took off for second base in the next at-bat. The Fords committed an error trying to catch O'Donnell stealing, allowing Beer to score and tie up the game.
Brian Lovaglio then singled down the third-base line on the next pitch to score O'Donnell to give the Lions their first lead of the afternoon. TCNJ added one more run in the eighth inning as insurance, and Maharaja recorded the save and secured a 6-4 victory for the Lions
