FLEMINGTON, N.J. – On Thursday, the TCNJ baseball team dropped an 8-9 decision against Ursinus in a game which lasted ten innings.
It was a back-and-forth contest between the Lions (2-4) and the Bears (3-4), with the two teams locked at eight runs a piece after nine innings. TCNJ's bats had their most successful day since the first game of the year, scoring eight runs and logging nine hits. The Lions started the day positively, jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning thanks to a
Tyler Provost three-run homer over the right-field fence.
Ursinus took the lead back in the fourth to make it a 4-3 contest, but TCNJ responded with another three-run frame in the bottom of the fifth.
Joe Tammaro lined a double into left field after
Nate McLaughlin got on base with a single.
Jake Carter then drove in Tammaro with a sacrifice fly. After that,
Michael Contiliano smashed a two-run homer to right field to take a two-run lead. In the next inning, Provost hit the second home run of his day — this time a solo shot to center — to tack on another run and make it a three-run lead for the Lions.
The Bears hit back in a huge way in the top of the seventh, however, scoring four runs thanks to two hit-by-pitches, a few hits, and many walks. Ursinus threatened to run away with the game in that inning as well, loading the bases multiple times in the frame. However, TCNJ reliever
Andrew Wilkinson got a big punchout to end the frame, setting up the Lions to tie the game at eight in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth, and TCNJ were able to get to the bottom of the ninth with a chance for a walk-off win. TCNJ loaded the bases with two outs, but the Bears escaped to send the game into extras. The Bears wasted no time, loading the bases in the top of the tenth and walking in a run to take a 9-8 lead. Ursinus then got a 1-2-3 inning to end the contest in favor of the Bears.
