EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's tennis team took the first step toward extending its one-of-a-kind streak of NJAC dominance on Wednesday, cruising to a 4-0 sweep of William Paterson in a conference semifinal match.
The Lions (18-1), who made a major move up 13 spots to No. 27 in the latest ITA national rankings on Wednesday, needed all of 47 minutes to polish off the sweep of the fourth-seeded Pioneers and advance to Saturday's conference final, where they'll meet second-seeded Rutgers-Camden after the Scarlet Raptors blanked Kean, 4-0, in the other semifinal match.
TCNJ is now on the cusp of its 43
rd consecutive NJAC championship, the longest known streak of conference titles at any level and for any sport.
This one was a runaway.
Eleni Dakos and
Gabrielle Brideau were first off the doubles courts with a 6-0 shutout at No. 2, followed within moments by
Elizabeth Ring and
Gabriella Robinson with the clincher.
Zoey Albert and
Shruti Mannan led, 4-1, when Ring and Robinson ended doubles play.
The race to claim the first three singles points was won by – in order – Mannan at number four, Robinson at number five, and Ring at number six, all by double-bagel.
Dakos was just a few points shy with a 6-0, 5-0 at number one, while Albert was in front 6-0, 3-0 at number two.
Brideau was ahead 6-0, 2-1 at number three.
