Sally Miller took over the TCNJ softball program in 1996 and directed TCNJ to a record sixth NCAA Division III Championship that season. Miller has maintained TCNJ as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division III.
Miller ranks among the winningest active coaches in Division III by percentage and total victories. With a career log of 747-363-3, she boasts a win percentage of .673. During her time at TCNJ, she has led the program to six NJAC titles and 14 NCAA appearances.
In the 2023 season, Miller reached her 700th career wins during a conference doubleheader against Kean, becoming just the 11th active NCAA Division III softball coach to reach the milestone. Miller led the program to their sixth NJAC championship while also making another appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Julia Kinnally was named as an NFCA First-Team All-American alongside garnering Conference Player of the Year, All-NJAC and All-Region recognitions. Kaci Neveling was nominated as a CSC Academic All-American. Elizabeth Gosse was named the NJAC Rookie of the Year. In total seven Lions made All-Conference and five were named to the All-Region teams.
Miller guided TCNJ to the NJAC championship game and another trip to the NCAA regionals in 2022. The Lions collected five all-conference and five all-region laurels and lost a pair of one-run thrillers to Case Western in the regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
Miller coached TCNJ to a 26-5 record and an NJAC Championship in the 2021 season. The conference title was the second in a row for the Lions. TCNJ also competed in its third-straight NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, where the Lions advanced to the regional championship game and fell in a close 6-5 battle against eventual national champion Virginia Wesleyan. Miller and her staff were named NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year, which marked the second consecutive honor for the Lions
In 2019, Miller's Lions put forth a terrific season. They posted a record of 33-8 including 17-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action. The Lions took home the NJAC Championship, as they went 3-0 in the conference tourney for a 20-1 mark in NJAC play on the season. TCNJ also made its second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, and the third in the last four seasons. Jess McGuire and Lauren Conroy each earned NFCA Second Team All-America honors. Miller was named NJAC Coach of the Year, and led the staff to NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. She earned her 600th victory in March when TCNJ defeated Salisbury University.
In 2014, Miller earned her 500th career victory, reaching that milestone when her Lions swept a conference doubleheader from New Jersey City University.
Miller has guided the program to the NCAA Tournament 14 times with three appearances in the College World Series, winning the 1996 NCAA crown, taking fourth in 1997, and fifth in 2000. She has produced 17 All-Americans and six CoSIDA/CSC Academic All-Americans.
In 2000, Miller was honored as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in addition to being tabbed as the National Fastpitch Coach Association East Region Coach of the Year. She again earned those two honors after a very successful 2010 season, which also saw Miller garner her 400th career victory with a win at Rutgers University-Newark on April 10. Miller earned her third NJAC Coach of the Year honor in 2018 after the Lions earned the regular season title with an impressive 16-2 league mark.
A former third baseman at the University of Iowa, she was a member of the Hawkeye softball program from 1986 until 1989, serving as team captain for both the 1988 and 1989 squads. During her senior season, Miller helped Iowa capture the Big Ten Conference Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Division I Regional. She was named to the 1987 Big Ten All-Conference and All-Mideast Regional All-America Second Teams, as well as the team’s MVP. During her career, Miller left her mark on the Iowa softball records. Twice, she set the school’s single-season assist mark with 170 assists in both 1987 and 1988.
After graduating from Iowa in December of 1989, Miller served as an assistant softball coach for Princeton University from 1990–1992. Following her stint at Princeton, she spent one season as an assistant for the Michigan State University softball program before her arrival at Indiana University in 1993. Miller came to the College after serving as the assistant softball coach at Indiana in 1994 and 1995.
