Michael Doughtie began his role as Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Development in the summer of 2023. Doughtie lead the department’s compliance and student-athlete development initiatives.
"I am honored to join The College of New Jersey athletics department as the next Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Development,” Doughtie said upon his hire. “I want to thank Executive Director of Athletics, Amanda V. DeMartino, and the search committee for providing me the opportunity to work with students, coaches, and staff at such a prestigious institution with a rich tradition of athletic success and academic excellence.
“I look forward to building important relationships with students, coaches, and campus community, as well as being excited to contribute to the holistic development of TCNJ student-athletes."
Doughtie came to TCNJ after serving for nearly six years as the director of athletics at Essex County College. While at Essex, he developed and implemented a comprehensive student-athlete success plan that led to the highest departmental GPA in its history. Four teams at Essex placed in the top ten nationally in cumulative team GPA. The initiative also significantly improved graduation and retention rates among student-athletes.
Under his watch, Essex teams made eight national championship appearances while winning eight NJCAA Region 19 titles. In the community, the department’s volunteer and service hours have reached new department highs.
In his role as athletics director, Doughtie implemented a new recruiting strategy that yielded a high percentage increase in student-athlete enrollment, and graduating Essex sophomores have earned nearly $3.5 million in scholarship dollars to several NCAA institutions.
“We are excited to announce Michael Doughtie as our next Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Development,” DeMartino said. “We had a very competitive pool of candidates but Mike's experience, passion and commitment to student success really aligned with this role. I'd like to welcome Mike and his family to TCNJ Athletics!”
Doughtie created the Essex County College Hall of Fame which will induct its first members in 2023-24. That dinner dovetails with a strategic fundraising plan that has increased departmental revenue generation in each of the past three years.
Since 2018, he’s been the chairperson of the baseball committee for the Garden State Athletic Conference and NJCAA Region 19. He also served as the NJCAA Region 19 Assistant Director of Men’s Sports, assisting with the oversight of all men’s sports operations.
Prior to his time at Essex, Doughtie spent six years at RCSJ Cumberland, advancing from an athletics assistant to an assistant director of athletics and student life. He also spent four seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach at RCSJ Cumberland.
Doughtie is a sports management graduate of Rutgers University, and he earned a master’s degree in sports management from Adelphi University.
