Senior night
Ewing, NJ … On Senior Night at The College of New Jersey, a pair of veterans provided the offensive spark the Lions needed to defeat William Paterson University 2-1 in a pivotal conference win.
Senior
Kevin Luber (Delran, NJ/Delran) connected with fellow senior
Anthony Staropoli (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) on a restart at the 62:38 mark as Staropoli's headball winner gave the Lions (6-4-4, 4-1-2 NJAC) a 1-0 lead. Just over ten minutes later, Luber hit
Dan Constants (Wayne, NJN/Wayne Hills) with a pass and the sophomore drilled a shot from 20 yards out into the right corner of the net for his first collegiate goal.
The Pioneers (6-4-5, 1-2-4 NJAC) fought back to make the game interesting as junior
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) headed in a corner kick from
Jonathan Donado (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) with 6:02 remaining in the game. But the Lions defense held down the fort as TCNJ maintained their hold on second place in New Jersey Athletic Conference standings.
Adam Friedman (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham) stopped four Pioneer shots for his fourth win of the season. The freshman goalkeeper made a spectacular save early in the second half when the score was still tied 0-0 when dove to his right to stop a bullet off the foot of Valerio from 18 yards out.
Luber now has eight assists on the season and 26 for his career, second all-time in TCNJ history. Staropoli knocked in his fourth goal of the season.
The Lions are back in action this Saturday when they take on Ramapo College at 1 p.m.
