Ewing, NJ... A pair of overtimes wasn't enough to determine a winner in the 2009 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship as The College of New Jersey and Richard Stockton College women's soccer teams battled for 110 minutes and then through an extended penalty kick session.
The teams were deadlocked at 0-0 through two overtimes and in penalty kicks, each team made their first six attempts. In the seventh round, TCNJ's Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) stopped Richard Stockton's Dailey Todd (Millville, NJ/Millville) putting the Lions in a position to claim the NJAC title. Sophomore Maria Grady (Sewell, NJ/Our lady of Mercy Academy) cashed in on her attempt as TCNJ collected its fourth crown in the last five years. TCNJ won the penalty kick round, 7-6.
The game finished as a tie, but by virtue of the penalty kicks, the Lions (16-2-1) earned the NJAC's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Tournament. The brackets for the upcoming tournament will be released on Monday, November 9.
The Ospreys, who were making their third straight appearance in the title game, finished the season with a 14-6-2 mark and hope to land an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
TCNJ had the two best scoring chances of the game with both coming in the final minutes of regulation. Each time, Osprey keeper Maria Dorris (Mantua, NJ/Clearview) made a pair of acrobatic stops. The first came as she leaped up and punched a shot by Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and then made an even better one thwarting Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) with a diving save with one minute left.
The Lions took all nine shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods and held a decisive 36-3 edge for the game.
Dorris finished the game with 12 saves for her sixth shutout of the season.
For the Lions, Clarke picked up her 12 shutout of the year making a pair of saves.
