TCNJ splits doubleheader at Richard Stockton

(Pomona, NJ) – Richard Stockton (17-7, 4-4) and College of New Jersey (16-12, 5-3) split an NJAC doubleheader today. Stockton pitcher Kaitlyn Corica (Iselin/JFK) tossed a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts as the Ospreys won the opener 1-0. TCNJ hurler Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) answered with a four-hit shutout and eight strikeouts to lead the Lions to a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Stockton scored the only run of the first game in the bottom of the fifth as Samantha Horner (Newfield/Buena) led off with a single and Kelly Dodd (Linwood/Mainland) blasted an RBI double off the left field fence. Horner was 2-3 with a double and a run for the Ospreys. Kelly Armstrong (Jackson/Jackson) went 2-2 with a stolen base for TCNJ.

Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood/Ridgewood) paced the Lions to the 2-0 win in the nightcap by going 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Crystal Lee (Dover/Morris Knolls) was 1-3 with a run scored for the Lions. Melissa Baumgartner (Mt. Ephraim/Audubon) went 1-3 with a double for Stockton.

Lee led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Seavers to give TCNJ a 1-0 lead. The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Seavers led off with a double and scored on a pinch-hit RBI double off the bat of Camille Heller (Maple Shade/Maple Shade). Lindsay Connell (Rahway/Rahway) started the seventh inning with a single for Stockton, but Fitzsimmons struck out the next three batters to seal the 2-0 win.

Stockton will host Polytechnic in a non-league doubleheader tomorrow at 3:30 pm. TCNJ will visit William Paterson for an NJAC twinbill on Saturday at 1 pm.
