Ewing, NJ...The College of New Jersey men's soccer team locked horns with Drew University and settled for a 0-0 tie in the season opener at Lions Stadium. The Lions battled the Rangers for 110 minutes, but neither team was able to net their first tally of the year.
Both the TCNJ and Drew offensive units encountered stingy defense and had difficulty estlablishing a rhthym in their offensive third. The Lions did mount a few attacks in the second half and overtime periods, outshooting the Rangers 12-8 on the game. Their best chance came with 3:04 to play when senior Kevin Luber (Delran, NJ/Delran) sent a sharp ground pass from the right side to freshman Taylor Gregory (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) just outside the 18 yardline. Gregory fired a low, one-time that Drew goalkeeper Rich Boland stopped to keep the game deadlocked.
The defensive backfield of senior Adam Dorflinger (Seargentsville, NJ/Hunterdon Central), juniors Mike Razzoli (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), Matt Erny (Delran, NJ/Delran), and Phillip Cunha (Milford, NJ/Immaculata) played a solid game in front of TCNJ keepers Chris Kulick (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Eric Goldwaser (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills), who were credited with the shuout. Boland had four saves for Drew to notch his first shutout of the season.
Senior Anthony Staropoli (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) played extremely well in the midfield for the Lions along with sophomore Anthony DiPalmo (Somerale, NJ/Triton Regional).
The Lions travel to North Carolina on Saturday, September 5 to compete in the North Carolina Wesleyan Fall Classic. Their first game is slated fo 2:00 p.m. The Lions return home on September 16 when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology.
