Mike Razzoli (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) closed out senior night in style scoring with 14 seconds remaining in double-overtime as The College of New Jersey men's soccer team defeated Rowan University 2-1 at Lions' Stadium.
The Lions (9-5-3, 7-1-1) finished in first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, earning them the top seed in the upcoming NJAC tournament. TCNJ will play the winner of the fourth-seeded Richard Stockton College versus fifth-seeded Montclair State University game held this Saturday, October 30. The NJAC semi-final game will be played at Lions' Stadium on Tuesday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m.
The winner of the NJAC playoffs receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship tournament.
Rowan (6-12-2, 2-7 NJAC) took a 1-0 lead 16:14 into the match when sophomore
Ryan Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) tallied his ninth goal of the season. Lions' goalkeeper
Chris Kulick (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) made an initial diving stop on a
Nick Bolton's (Dover, DE/Dover) shot from the left side, but Gordon streaked in from the right side to finish for an early Prof lead.
The Lions dominated play after the intermission and with 24:39 left in regulation, sophomore
Tyler Cignarella (Hopewell Valley, NJ/Hopewell Valley) knocked in his first career goal to tie the game 1-1. Sophomore
Vince McEnroe (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) hit a corner kick to the foot of
Phil Cunha (West Milford, NJ/Immaculata). The senior defender ripped a shot off the crossbar, and Cignarella promptly squared up a first-time shot into the back of the net.
Razzoli put a great shot on net in the first overtime, but Rowan keeper
Charlie Cunliffe (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) made a diving save to his right to keep the game alive. TCNJ kept pressure throughout the second overtime period, and after 109:44 of play, Razzoli lofted a shot from the right side over Cunliffe and into the left pocket to set off a wild celebration.
It was Razzoli's second goal of the season and sixth of his career.
TCNJ outshot Rowan 23-8 in the game. Kulick won his second game of the season making three stops, while Cunliffe finished with seven saves.
