Senior Reflections

Ewing, NJ… Junior Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) lifted The College of New Jersey field hockey team to a 1-0 win over SUNY Cortland as she netted the game's only goal in the second half on Sunday.

The win put the 13th-ranked Lions at 15-4 on the season, while the 10th-ranked Red Dragons dipped to 14-3.

Prior to the game, TCNJ honored its five members of the senior class for their hard work and dedication to the program. That group included Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), Leah Geissler (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights), Kristen O'Neill (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), Kellyn Riley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), and Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright).

Notos made sure those seniors and the rest of the Lions came away with a win on “Senior Day” as she made a lunging play to redirect a pass from Geissler with 24:16 remaining in the game. The goal was her team-leading 13th of the season.

TCNJ had several other quality chances, including a pair of penalty strokes in the second half by Waller. In each case, Waller beat Red Dragon goalie Ashley Hughes (Seldon, NY/Comsewogue), only to see the shot ring off the post.

Cortland's best scoring chances came in the opening half as Brenda Semit (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) was involved in all of them. Lion goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made a nice kick save on one of those shots, while Waller and Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) each added defensive saves.

Syciarz collected four saves in picking up her seventh shutout of the season.

Hughes finished with 14 saves for the Red Dragons.

TCNJ closes out the regular season on Friday heading to 18th-ranked Rowan University with the winner of that game winning the New Jersey Athletic Conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
