TCNJ and Stevens battle to scoreless draw

Kendra Griffith picked up her seventh shutout of the season.

Box Score

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey and Stevens Institute of Technology battled for 110 minutes with neither team getting on the board as the two nationally-ranked women's soccer teams finished in a 0-0 tie on Wednesday at Lions' Stadium.

The second-ranked are now Lions 11-0-1 while the 17th-ranked Ducks are 10-1-1 on the year.

TCNJ, which ranks second nationally in team defense, posted its 11thh shutout in 12 games and lowered their team goals-against-average to 0.09.

While the team's defense was blanketing the Ducks, TCNJ's offense was busy as they finished the game holding a 34-6 edge in shots.

The Lions had two real quality chances in the opening half with freshman Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) getting the first of those as she redirected a shot on goal that Stevens goalie Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Christi, TX/Flour Bluff) made a diving save on. TCNJ's second bid came when Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) headed the ball toward the far post, but Duck defender Paige Allen (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Twp.) stepped in front of the shot denying the hosts of a goal.

In the second half, the hosts again had the better of the chances with sophomore Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) getting the best of those as she laced a shot from the near corner of the penalty area that just missed the far corner of the net.

In the first overtime, McClymont again came up big snaring a rising shot off of the foot of TCNJ's Amy Van Dyk (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) and then in the second overtime robbed Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) with a diving save.

McClymont finished the game with 15 saves for her sixth shutout.

It was a much quieter night for Lion keeper Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) as she needed to make only one save for her seventh shutout of the season.

TCNJ is idle until next week when first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference will be on the line when William Paterson University visits Lions' Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. start in Lions' Stadium. The Lions currently sit in sole possession of first place in the NJAC standings with 15 points thanks to a perfect 5-0 mark, while the Pioneers are a close second with 13 points going 4-0-1 in conference games.
