Kyle Rawson (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) hit a three-point shot in the final seconds of the game to give The College of New Jersey men's basketball team a thrilling 67-66 win over Drew University.
Rawson followed his clutch shot with a steal to secure the win, giving the Lions (3-7) their second straight win and first road victory of the year.
Al Matlock (Trenton, NJ/Solebury) matched Rawson with 18 points to lead TCNJ in scoring.
TCNJ trailed 63-56 with 3:40 remaining in the game. Three free throws by Matlock and a pair by
Brian Kelly (Clark, NJ/Lawrenceville Prep) closed the gap to 63-61 with less than two minutes to play. After Drew stretched the lead to 66-61 off a Luke Glass three-pointer, Kelly returned the favor by draining a shot behind the arc to cut the lead to two.
Glass then missed a jumper with 22 seconds left, but teammate Mike Mayes blocked a three-point attempt by
Donovan Smalls (Union, NJ/Union) with 12 ticks left on the clock. TCNJ maintained possession setting up Rawson for his late-game heroics. He knocked down a three-point shot to put his team ahead by one, and after a Ranger timeout, came up with his third steal of the game to give the Lions a dramatic victory.
Kelly finished with seven points and seven rebounds, while Smalls and junior
Pete Kelly (Mercerville, NJ/Nottingham) added six points. Senior
Steve Siracusa grabbed seven boards and freshman
Jason Chalmers (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) netted a pair of buckets off the bench.
Rawson also had six rebounds and five assists in the game.
The Lions are back at it tomorrow when they take on Marymount University. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
