Baseball edged by Ursinus 5-4

Box score

Collegeville, Pa... Five Ursinus College pitchers limited The College of New Jersey offense to six hits as the Bears chased the Lions 5-4 in Collegeville, Pa.

After pounding out a season-high 20 hits yesterday, TCNJ (4-7) failed to score a run in the six final innings as Ursinus (5-5) held onto a 5-4 lead they built with a two-run third inning. Sophomore right-hander Eric Lewis (Wantagh, NY/W.C. Mepham) matched the Bears staff with 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief scattering four hits while striking out five.

The Bears took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first on five straight hits. The Lions battled back with a run a in the second and three in the third. Sophomore James Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) came through with a two-run single to give TCNJ a 4-3 lead. But Ursinus came back with two in the bottom of the inning to regain a one-run advantage.

The Lions were unable to take advantage of the pitching performance by Lewis. The bats fell silent manufacturing just two base hits in the seventh and ninth innings.

Junior Jason Zegarski (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) had a pair of hits extending his hitting streak to 11 games while teammate Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) also extended with a double, a run scored, and a run batted in.

TCNJ hosts Haverford College in their home opener tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Ackerman Park.
