Gwynedd Valley, PA ... The College of New Jersey baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 in the first inning, but ended up falling to Gwynedd-Mercy College 10-6.
The Lions (5-8) had plenty of offense stroking 12 hits and was the recipient of a generous host defense as Gwynedd (9-5) committed seven error on the afternoon. But TCNJ was unable to take full advantage as the Griffins scored ten runs on 13 hits to secure its ninth victory of the season.
After the Lions scored four in the first, Gwynedd came right back with a four of its own when senior Nick Goetz (Marlton, NJ) blasted a grand slam to center field to even up the score with one swing. TCNJ slipped ahead 6-5 in the fifth, but another four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth put the game on ice for GMC.
Senior Chris Esperon (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) and sophomore James Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) had three hits apiece for Lions while sophomore Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) had a pair of safeties.
Junior Jason Zegarski (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) chipped in with a base hit as he and Galeotafiore's hitting streaks to 13 games.
TCNJ returns home tomorrow to host Penn State Abington at George Ackerman Park for a 3:30 game.
