Lions rebound with convincing win over Penn State Abington

Box score

Ewing, NJ... Multiple runs in the first four innings propelled The College of New Jersey to a 20-2 win over Penn State Abington College.

The Lions' 17-hit attack was led by sophomore Ed Zakrzewski (Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central) who had a terrific day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a home run, four runs batted in, and four runs scored.

Junior Connor Henderson (Monmouth Jct, NJ/South Brunswick) went five innings for his fourth win in as many starts. Henderson struck five limiting Penn State to three hits allowing two runs, both of which were unearned.

After TCNJ (6-8) took a 3-0 lead in the first, the Nittany Lions (2-11) came back with two in the second. The Lions retaliated with four in the bottom of the frame, the big blow coming off the bat of freshman Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North) who launched a bases-clearing double to left-center field to open the game up to 7-2.

In the third, sophomore Tom Wile (Maplewood, NJ/St. Peters Prep) drove a ball off the right-center field fence to start the inning. One out later, sophomore Zakrzewski turned on a pitch and deposited it over the right-field fence for his first career homer.

Wile had three hits and crossed home plate three times and junior Jason Zegarski (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) picked up three more for the Lions. Senior Chris Esperon (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) and sophomore Jim Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) each knocked in a pair of runs.

Sophomore Rick Nuel (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West), senior A.J. Adamczyk (Brielle, NJ/Manalapan), and junior Joe Marchitelli (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) threw the final four innings of spotless relief for TCNJ.

Sophomore Joe Nicholson (Warminster, Pa/Archbishop Wood) had a hit and two runs batted in for the Nittany Lions. Freshman Matt Speckman (Cherry, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and sophomore John Schiavone (Perkasie, Pa/Pennridge) also chipped in with safeties.

Zegarski and catcher Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) extended their hitting streaks to 14 games.

TCNJ hosts Alvernia College on Monday, March 29 at 3:30 pm. Penn State Abington is back in action tomorrow visiting Richard Stockton College in a non-conference doubleheader.
