Ponoma, NJ ... An eight-run third inning by Richard Stockton College was simply too much to overcome for The College of New Jersey baseball team as they dropped a 14-3 decision to the Ospreys.
The Lions (15-15, 8-5 NJAC) suffered their second New Jersey Athletic Conference game in as many days and will look to rebound tomorrow against Rutgers University-Newark in an important league doubleheader.
Stockton (15-15, 5-7 NJAC) rattled off 20 hits in the contest and blew the game open with eight runs in third inning. The most frustrating aspect of the inning for TCNJ was that they retired the first two batters in the inning. Four walks and six hits later, including a three-run homer by
Dan McGuckin, and Lions trailed 9-1.
The Ospreys got on the board first with a run in the second, but TCNJ tied it in the top of the third when sophomore
Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) singled to score junior
Jason Zegarski (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence). Stockton then had its big inning and followed it up with four more runs in the fourth inning.
Zegarski had a pair of hits in the game and has now hit in 12 straight. Sophomore
Jimmy Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) also had two hits along with centerfielder
Ed Zakrzewski (Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central).
TCNJ now has its work cut out for them entering the weekend as they travel to Flemington, NJ to take on Rutgers-Newark, who is one slot behind the Lions in the NJAC standings at 6-6. The doubleheader is slated to start at noon.
