Lions soccer falls in opener

Box score

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey men's soccer team dropped a 5-2 decision to Drew University in its 2010 season opener.

The Lions dug a deep hole early giving up four unanswered goals just 13:07 into the match. TCNJ battled back to make it game as junior Anthony DiPalmo (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional) headed in a corner kick from sophomore Vince McEnroe (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) with just under 20 minutes remaining in the first half.

The goal provided some momentum for the Lions and they cut the lead in half when junior Chris Pisano (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) flicked a header over Drew goalkeeper off a restart served by sophomore Mike Razzoli (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy). But just under two minutes into the second half, Drew's Philip Mabika (Lexington, KY/Henry Clay) tallied a fifth Ranger goal to make it a three-goal game.

Sophomore Tommy Quirk (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) had a pair of goals in the opener for Drew and senior Jeff Rogers (Eldenburg, MD/Century) notched 10 saves to earn his first win of the season. Rogers also stopped a TCNJ penalty kick late in the first half.

The Lions will travel this weekend to compete in the University of Mary Washington Classic in Fredericksburg, Va. TCNJ takes on the host at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and then squares off with Lynchburg College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Drew will face Keystone College on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Drew Fall Festival.
