Ewing, NJ... The top seed in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference will be on the line in the regular-season finale as The College of New Jersey women's soccer team remained undefeated in conference play deposing of New Jersey City University by the score of 6-1 on Saturday.
TCNJ is now 7-0 with 21 points in conference play and have already clinched a first-round bye in the tournament. Rowan University is also undefeated in NJAC play heading into their game on Monday with Ramapo College. The Lions, which are 10-2-2 overall, and Profs will then meet on Wednesday, October 26 in Glassboro.
Prior to the game with the NJCU, the Lions honored their senior class for their hard work and dedication to the program. Those honored in a brief ceremony were
Jaclyn Greco (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan),
Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial),
Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford), and
Nikki Migliori (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).
Once the game started, the Lions exploded for three goals in the opening 13:21 with
Lauren Giles (Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) kicking off that barrage as she laced a shot into the upper portion of the net after
Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) banged a shot off of the crossbar. That goal came 3:47 into the game.
McGinley and
Amy Van Dyk (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) then scored goals 3:08 apart increasing TCNJ's advantage to 3-0.
The Gothic Knights then got on the board for the first time in the series with the Lions as Jennifer Albuja (Union, City, NJ/Hoboken) chipped in her NJAC leading 20th goal of the season. The goal was the first against the Lions since the series began with TCNJ posting shutouts in the first 16 meetings.
NJCU came within inches of making it a 3-2 game as Albuja sent a shot at TCNJ's goal, but defender Lauren Diogaurdi (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) used her body to stop the ball before crossing the goal line.
The Lions got the goal right back as McGinley scored off of a low shot for her team-leading 10th of the season. That goal came with 27:12 on the clock.
Freshman
Leigh Applestein (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) accounted for both goals in the second half as she netted her first collegiate goal with 14:24 left in the game and added another with eight minutes on the clock. Her first goal was assisted by
Korrie Harkins (Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and the second by
Claire Whiteman (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo).
Lion keeper
Cristina Gacos (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) made four saves for her 10th win of the season.
In goal for NJCU, Brittany Hoffman (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) finished with a career-high 14 saves, including several diving stops.
The Gothic Knights (12-6, 3-4 NJAC) cap the regular season on Wednesday, hosting Rutgers University-Camden at 3:30 p.m.
