Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey and Lynchburg College each posted victories in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday and will now meet for a spot in the national semifinals.

TCNJ used a late goal to get past William Smith College, 1-0, while the Lynchburg posted a 2-0 shutout of Catholic University.

The Lions and Hornets will meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Lions' Stadium with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III semifinals on November 19 in Dudley, MA. Both Lynchburg and TCNJ are riding impressive winning streaks as the Hornets have won 19 straight and the Lions have 11 consecutive victories. The final two rounds of the tournament will be hosted by Nichols College.

#3 The College of New Jersey 1, #13 William Smith College 0
Junior Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) scored the game's only goal as she ripped a one-timer from the slot propelling the Lions into the third round. Jenkins scored on a nice feed from junior Christy Wham (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) with 15:07 remaining in the game. That play originally started on a penalty corner with the goal being her 15th of the season. It was also her team-leading seventh game-winning goal.

The win put the Lions at 21-2 on the season, while the Herons finished 16-5. Those 21 wins are the most for TCNJ since 1996.

The game was scoreless through the opening half with William Smith coming close to getting on the board late in the opening half as Taylor Cappello (Windsor, NY/Windsor) had back-to-back shots from close range, but each time TCNJ goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made the save.

That strong defensive play continued into the second half as William Smith's Sara Helmer (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) made a defensive save on a shot by TCNJ's Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South).

Lion defender Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) added a diving defensive save minutes later on a shot by Heron forward Amy David (Greene, NY/Greene) that came off of a 2-on-1.

Pigott added a second defensive save moments after Jenkins scored, swiping a shot away by Cappello.

Syciarz made eight saves for her ninth shutout of the season.

In goal for the Herons, Catherine Hare (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) finished with three saves.

#4 Lynchburg College 2, #9 Catholic University 0
Lynchburg, the nation's top scoring team, netted a goal in each half as the Hornets moved into the third round.

Senior Tarah Rahner (Lincoln University, PA/Bishop Shanahan) opened the scoring an even 18 minutes into the game as she poked in a loose ball from right in front of the cage.

In the second half, the Hornets doubled that advantage 11:14 into the new period with Kelli Williams (New Castle, DE/William Penn) depositing her 13th of the season. Williams was camped out by the far post and redirected a pass from Shelly Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester).

Catholic came close to cutting that margin in half as Kim Herrman (Havertown, PA/Country Day Sacred Heart) fired off consecutive shots with the first being stopped by Lynchburg goalie Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) and the second by defender Melanie Tenney (Yorktown, VA/Tabb).

Frye made six saves for her fifth shutout of the season. As a team, the Hornets have rattled off four straight shutouts and have 14 on the year.

In goal for the Cardinals, Megan Comunale (Hammonton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) turned away six Hornet shots.
