Lions win 5th straight behind Henderson's gem

Box score

Ewing, NJ ... Senior Connor Henderson (Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) tossed eight shutout innings as The College of New Jersey baseball team won its fifth straight game defeating Ursinus College 8-0.

Henderson (2-0) earned his second victory of the 2011 season as he's now allowed just one earned run in 24 innings pitched this season. Against the Bears (2-8), the right-hander scattered six hits, walked two, and struck out four. Junior Mike Ham (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) pitched the ninth to complete the Lions' first shutout of 2011.

Juniors Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and Jimmy Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) led TCNJ's offense with a two hits each, while sophomores Michael Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) and Nick Cifelli (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) each drove in a pair of runs.

The Lions (9-2) jumped out to a 1-0 in the second courtesy of an RBI single by sophomore Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor North). With two outs in the inning, Cifelli walked, advanced on an Ethan Carey (Cogan Station, PA/Montoursville) single to left, and rumbled home on Kelly's base hit through the right side.

A three-run fourth pushed the lead to 4-0. A sacrifice fly by Murphy followed by a two-run single off the bat of Cifelli gave Henderson all the cushion he would need.

The Bears threatened in the top of fourth when junior Lou Argentine (Garnett Valley, PA/Garnett Valley) led the inning off with a double. Senior Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, NJ/The Hill School) followed with a base hit to put runners at first and third. Junior Ben Gresh (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) then laced a line drive to center field, but Murphy made the catch in center, fired a strike to Ruzich, who turned and threw to Galeotafiore to cut down Argentine at the plate.

Galeotafiore roped a single to left-center to drive in Kelly in the fourth inning to stretch the margin to 5-0. Murphy knocked in his second run of the game with a ground ball single to left in the seventh and TCNJ tacked two more in the eighth.

Henderson, who was the New Jersey Athletic Conference and East Coast Athletic Conference Metro Pitcher of the Week last week, now has an earned run average this season of 0.39.

TCNJ visits Haverford College tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. game. Ursinus travels to Penn State Abington for a doubleheader on Saturday that starts at noon.
