TCNJ softball splits twinbill with Moravian

The College of New Jersey softball team split a double header with Moravian College in its 2011 home opener dropping the first game 3-0 before coming back to take the second 6-0.

The 23rd-ranked Lions (10-1) suffered their first setback of the season, but picked themselves up off the mat to turn back the 25th-ranked Greyhounds (8-3) in the nightcap.

Game 1
Moravian 3, TCNJ 0

Moravian starter Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) held the Lions without a hit as the Greyhounds took the opening game.

TCNJ pitcher Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) suffered her first defeat of the season as she went the distance with three strikeouts.

The Greyhounds plated a run in the top of the fifth as Maura Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Landsdale Catholic) drove in that run with a double. That run was the first allowed by Fitzsimmons bringing an end to her impressive scoreless streak to start the season at 35.2 innings.

Moravian made it a three-run cushion in the seventh pushing a pair of runs across accounting for the final score.

Game 2
TCNJ 6, Moravian 0

Freshman Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) tossed seven scoreless innings to record a complete-game shutout for her third mound victory of the season. Carisone scattered four hits, walked one, and struck out eight as maintained command of the game from start to finish.

The Lions grabbed the early lead in the second game getting on the board in the last of the first inning as Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) doubled in Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) and scored two batters later as Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) singled to left.

In the second, TCNJ doubled that lead as Sogluizzo lofted a sacrifice fly to left bringing home Michelle Kent (Sparta, NJ/Pope John), who opened the inning with a walk. Lee scored the second run as she raced home on a base hit by Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) .

Lee generated another run in the fourth as she laced a double into the gap in right scoring Michelle Casale (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) from second. Lee then came around to cross home plate as Sogluizzo doubled for the second time in the game.

TCNJ continues its home stand on Saturday hosting Susquehanna University for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
