Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey softball team used a walk-off victory in the opening game and then won via a shutout in the second to pull off a doubleheader sweep against visiting Muhlenberg College on Tuesday. The Lions rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win and then picked up 5-0 triumph in the second.
The pair of wins elevates TCNJ's record to 13-2 on the season, while Muhlenberg dropped to 8-7.
TCNJ continues its stretch of tough opponents on Saturday, March 26 as the Lions host 24th-ranked SUNY Cortland for a doubleheader at Lions' Park. Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
Game 1
TCNJ 5, Muhlenberg 4
TCNJ rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to win walk away with a win in the opener. After the Mules scored three times in the top of the inning, the Lions roared right back with a pair as sophomore
Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) tied the score at 4-4 with a base hit and senior
Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) plated the winning run with a base hit along the right-field line.
Muhlenberg got those three runs on a home run from senior Ashley Brewer (Somerset, NJ/Bishop Ahr) in the top of the seventh to erase a 3-1 deficit.
The visitors opened the scoring in the top of the third as Brewer hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Erica Wenzel (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), who opened the inning with a double.
That lead didn't last long as it took the hosts exactly two batters to pull even. Junior
Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) singled and stole second, before racing home a sharp single to center by sophomore
Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South).
TCNJ plated another run in the fourth for its first lead of the game as Hommen scored on a sacrifice fly by
Michelle Casale (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) making it a 2-1 game.
The Lions added their third run in the last of the sixth as Casale singled to left scoring Cawley.
Hommen and Cawley led TCNJ and the plate with three hits apiece.
Freshman
Austin Leigh (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) picked up the win in relief for the Lions retiring the only batter she faced.
Game 2
TCNJ 5, Muhlenberg 0
Freshman pitcher Kelly Hardman (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) fired a one-hitter as she earned the complete-game shutout. The win was her third of the season and her first shutout.
Hardman also got plenty of help from her defense as the Lions turned a double play and Casale snared a sharp line drive at second base to take away a base hit.
The Lions got the early jump in the second game scoring in their first at bat as sophomore
Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) singled through the left side and then moved into scoring position by stealing second. She was there long as Huttner drilled a base hit into the gap in right.
TCNJ used a familiar formula in the third to extend its lead to 2-0 as Sogluizzo got aboard with a hit and swiped second. Huttner again delivered with a runner in scoring position with a single to center making it a two-run game.
The Lions padded the lead in the fifth with three runs with
Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) coming up with a big two-run single in the inning.
Huttner collected three hits for the hosts, while Sogluizzo and Seamster each had two.
