Wayne, NJ... Host William Paterson University took both ends of a doubleheader from The College of New Jersey softball team on Thursday as the Pioneers held off the Lions 7-6 in the opening game and then took the second 8-3.
The two losses squared TCNJ's record in the New Jersey Athletic Conference at 6-6, while the team is 20-10 overall.
The Lions are right back on the field tomorrow with another road conference doubleheader heading to New Jersey City University.
Game 1
William Paterson University 7, TCNJ 6
William Paterson battled back from a 4-0 deficit and then held off a late TCNJ charge to win the opening game by a run.
The Lions raced out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play as senior
Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) doubled in a pair of runs and scored on a double by
Katelyn Congilose (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).
Congilose then made it 4-0 with a RBI single in the third as Cawley again came around to touch home plate.
The Pioneers scored three times in the bottom of the third and then scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to grab their first lead of the game.
TCNJ got two of the runs back in the sixth as
Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) singled in a run, while
Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) forced in another after reaching base on a catcher's interference call.
The Lions had 12 hits in the game as Hommen, Cawley, Congilose, and
Michelle Kent (Sparta, NJ/Pope John) each finished with two.
Game 2
William Paterson University 8, TCNJ 3
Both teams scored in the opening inning as the Pioneers led 1-0 before the Lions knotted things at a run apiece in the latter half of the inning. TCNJ manufactured that run as
Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, promptly stole second, and came home on a double to left center by Hommen.
After William Paterson pushed the difference to 8-1, the Lions pushed two more runs across as Sogluizzo singled to center scoring
Kristen Lake (Readington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and
Corinne Minicozzi (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne).
Senior
Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) collected a pair of hits for the Lions, including a double.
