Lions take both ends of doubleheader at NJCU

Jersey City, NJ... The College of New Jersey softball team got back on the winning side of things as the Lions picked up a pair of victories on Friday at New Jersey City University. TCNJ claimed the opening game of the doubleheader by the score of 10-2 in five innings and then completed the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in the second game.

The Lions bumped their conference record to 8-6, while going to 22-10 overall.

TCNJ is off until Tuesday, April 26 when they host rival Rowan University for a doubleheader at Lions' Park with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.

Game 1
TCNJ 10, New Jersey City University 2 (5 innings)

Sophomore Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had the hot bat for the Lions in the opening game as she went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and also scored twice.

Hommen had a two-run single during a three-run first inning for the Lions and then drove in another run with a base hit in the

Junior Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) tossed a complete game as she allowed just one hit. She is now 7-2 on the season.

Sophomore Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) and junior Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) each scored twice.

Game 2
TCNJ 5, New Jersey City University 3

The Lions used the big in the second game as they plated four runs in the second inning as senior Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) got things going with a triple. She then scored on an error, while Lee tripled later in the inning bringing home two more runs. She then capped the scoring in the inning as she scored on a ground out by Sogluizzo.

After the Gothic Knights got one of those runs back, Sogluizzo quickly pushed the difference back to four runs as she singled in Corinne Minicozzi (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne).

NJCU added single runs in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Lions completed the sweep with the 5-3 win.

Freshman pitcher Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) picked up her team-leading eighth win of the season scattering five hits of seven innings with only two of the three runs she allowed being earned.

Sophomore Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) had a pair of hits in the win for the Lions.
