Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey baseball team will visit Rowan University in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament.
The Lions (25-10, 11-7 NJAC) finished fifth and will play the second-seed Profs (27-9-1/14-4 NJAC) tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3:30 p.m. in Glassboro. TCNJ dropped both regular season games to Rowan this year losing 16-3 and 7-4.
It's been strong, but unsettled regular season for the Lions. They had an impressive spring trip, returning from Arizona with an 8-2 mark. TCNJ ran off nine straight wins, but hit a snag for a brief period as conference play commenced. They lost five of their first six NJAC games, which put them behind the eight-ball in qualifying for the playoffs.
The Lions rallied, however, winning 10 consecutive games. Nine of those victories were conferences matches, which put them back in the thick of the post-season chase. They split a pair of doubleheaders in the final weekend of the season to place fifth overall.
Weather was also a factor during the regular season. When the sun was shining, the schedule read practice. Game days, however, were almost certain to be marked by an unpleasant forecast. TCNJ lost several non-conference games and was forced to play eight games in the final week of the season.
The slate is wiped clean for the post-season and the Lions will begin their quest towards the 2011 NCAA Championships at Rowan. A win against the Profs will advance them in the winner's bracket to play at the winner of the Rutgers University-Newark/Ramapo College game.
The second round will be played on Thursday afternoon before the remainder of the NJAC will take place at Kean University. The Cougars (31-7/14-4 NJAC) defeated Ramapo College 6-5 to clinch the regular season title.
