Ewing, NJ... Philadelphia Phillies play-by-play broadcaster Tom McCarthy '90 was enshrined into the Trenton Baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday, July 14. The ceremony took place before the Thunder vs. Reading Phillies game at Waterfront Park.
McCarthy, who graduated from the College in 1990 with a degree in communications, served with the Trenton Thunder the first six years of their existence. A big-league announcer the last 11 years with the Phillies and New York Mets, McCarthy became the 16th member honored and was delighted to go in with longtime friend and former Thunder manager DeMarlo Hale.
"It is an extreme honor to join the likes of Bus Saidt, Mo Cunningham, Al Downing, Sam Plumeri and so many other great people who have had an impact on Trenton and baseball in Mercer County,” noted McCarthy, who used to broadcast games from the press box in Lions' Stadium. “My roots are down the shore in Brick, but the foundation of who I am and what I do began at TCNJ and carried over to The Times and eventually to the Thunder. I am very humbled by this honor."
A current resident of Allentown, NJ, McCarthy was hired as Director of Public and Media Relations for the Thunder in 1993 and promoted to Assistant General Manager in 1996, while also working as one of the team's broadcasters, doing play-by-play on radio and television. After the 1999 season, he left the Thunder to pursue a full-time career in broadcasting, creating the first local-driven show on ESPN Radio 1680 AM.
McCarthy is in his third year as the television play-by-play man for the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2001-2005) as a radio play-by-play voice and as their pre-game and post-game radio host before spending two seasons as a play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets on WFAN.
McCarthy became the sixteenth member of Trenton Baseball Hall of Fame joining George Case, Harold "Bus" Saidt, James Maloney, Al Downing, Steve Braun, Bob Ryan, Tony Clark, Nomar Garciaparra, Samuel Plumeri Sr., Michael DeCello, Mo Cunningham, David Eckstein, Ken Macha, Sonny Pittaro and DeMarlo Hale.
