Galloway NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team exploded for 10 goals as the Lions coasted to a 10-0 win at Richard Stockton on Tuesday.
The 10th-ranked Lions are 5-1 overall on the season and have won both New Jersey Athletic Conference games, while the Ospreys are 4-3 and 0-2 in the conference.
Things got off to a hectic start for TCNJ as the Ospreys earned three penalty corners in the opening 3:30 and forced Lion goalie
Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) to make one save, while defender
Camille Passucci (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) recorded a defensive save to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions then settled down and took over. With 13:18 expired, junior
Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) opened the scoring, while
Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) made it 2-0 with an assist from
Christy Wham (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville).
TCNJ exploded for three more goals in the final five minutes of the half as Wham set up freshman
Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) for her second goal of the season and just over three minutes later Wham dished out another assist. This time Passucci was the beneficiary as she deposited the ball in the Richard Stockton net.
Okuniewicz capped the big half with a goal off of a penalty stroke with 56 remaining before halftime.
The second half was much of the same as the Lions continued its offensive barrage. Wham added to her already big night with a goal from Jenkins 2:35 into the new frame, while Passucci notched her second of the night five minutes later as TCNJ's lead grew to 7-0. Passucci's second goal was assisted by
Erin Waller (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township).
The goals kept coming as Passucci completed the hat trick to make it 8-0 and freshman
Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) followed less than two minutes later making it a nine-goal difference. Those goals came 15:57 and 17:40 into the half. Healy capped the scoring with just less than 15 minutes left for her second of the game.
Syciarz finished with six saves as she picked up her fifth win of the year.
The Lions return home on Friday, September 23 as they face 19th-ranked Juniata College at 7:30 p.m. at Lions' Stadium.
