Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's soccer team continued to gain momentum as the season rolls forward thanks to its fourth straight shutout win. The Lions netted a goal in each half to defeat visiting Richard Stockton College 2-0 on Wednesday.
The win keeps the Lions undefeated in New Jersey Athletic Conference play at a modest 2-0, while they are 4-1 overall. The loss dropped the Ospreys to 4-3-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Lions struck first on a nice scoring play as
Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) put a perfectly-placed corner kick by the far post where a charging
Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) headed the ball in for her first goal of the season. That goal came midway through the period with 26:41 reading on the clock.
TCNJ almost doubled that lead a minute later as
Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) unleashed a rising shot that Osprey keeper Sarah Hinkle (Mullica Hill, NJ/Paul VI) reached up and snared.
In the second half, sophomore
Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) notched TCNJ's second goal as she made a crafty play stripping a Stockton defender of the ball at the top of the penalty area and then chipped a shot over Hinkle for a 2-0 advantage.
Freshman keeper
Cristina Gacos (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) made three saves for the Lions, with her best coming with 15:57 left in the game denying Stockton's Dailey Todd (Millville, NJ/Millville), who redirected a cross from the near wing.
TCNJ almost made it a three-goal difference with just over 10 minutes later, but Hinkle made a diving save on a shot by
Amy Van Dyk (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) that was heading toward the far corner. The Osprey keeper finished the game with a dozen saves.
The Lions continue conference play on Saturday, September 24 for a 7 p.m. start at Montclair State University, while Richard Stockton returns home to face William Paterson University at 2 p.m.
