Jersey City, NJ…The College of New Jersey women's soccer team put themselves where they control its own destiny when it comes to the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament as the Lions beat New Jersey City University 6-0 on Saturday.
The win set up a showdown with rival Rowan University in the regular-season finale on Thursday, October 24 at Lions' Stadium with the winner earning a bye in the opening round of the conference tournament.
The win put 18
th-ranked TCNJ to 14-1-1 and 6-1-1 in NJAC, while the Gothic Knights fell to 6-10-2 and 1-7 in conference play.
In a recurring theme this season, the Lions scored early as junior
Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) opened the scoring 8:44 into the game. That goal was assisted by junior
Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey).
That lead doubled later in the half as
Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) scored on a feed from
Brenna Rubino (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern). That goal came 22:13 into the period.
Sophomore
Jordan Downs (Brick, NJ/Brick) bumped the difference to three goals cashing in on a penalty kick six minutes later.
Another fast start in the second half tacked on a fourth goal with
Korrie Harkins (Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) netted her fourth of the season. That score came with only 2:31 expired in the fresh half.
TCNJ added two more goals later in the half with
Leigh Applestein (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) getting the first of those and then assisted on a goal by
Emma Culleton (New Providence, NJ/New Providence).
Keepers
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and
Cristina Gacos (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) shared the shutout with Griffith finishing with one save and Gacos three, including one on a penalty kick.
