Box Score

Winter Haven, Fla …The College of New Jersey baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to 24th-ranked SUNY Cortland on Thursday evening. The loss evens the Lions' season record at 3-3, while the Red Dragons improved to 5-4.

Following a 17-run, 19-hit outburst in a win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute, TCNJ managed only five hits in the game. The Lions ran into a hot pitcher in Aaron Schuldt as he struck at 12 in the contest to earn his second win of the season in as many starts. Schuldt commanded a sharp breaking pitch that helped manufacture nine called third strikes in the game.

Junior Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North) led TCNJ with a single and a double. Junior Michael Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech), classmate Nick Cifelli (Ewing, NJ/Ewing), and freshman Jacob Dewitt (Florence, NJ/Florence) also had base hits in the game.

Starting pitcher Robert Graber (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) held Cortland to single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth inning to keep the score within striking distance. The right-hander allowed just one earned run in five and two-thirds innings of work and struck out six.

But after Kelly reached third base in the top of the first, TCNJ had just three baserunners advance to second base the remainder of the contest.

The Lions did have the leadoff hitter on base in three of the first four innings, but were unable to generate a serious scoring threat against Schuldt. It marked the first time TCNJ has been held scoreless in a game since April 24, 2010 in 4-0 loss to Rutgers-Newark.

TCNJ will dust itself off to take on Suffolk University tomorrow at 2 p.m. It is the season opener for the Rams, who finished 24-21 in 2011.
