Box Score

Glassboro, NJ … The College of New Jersey baseball suffered a 7-3 loss to Rowan University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Friday.

The Lions (14-10, 2-2) have played excellent defensive baseball the past few weeks, but slipped up against the Profs (16-7, 2-2), committing four errors that contributed to the setback. Four of the seven runs scored by the host were unearned as senior Eric Lewis (Mantagh, NY/W.C. Mepham) was tagged with the loss.

Rowan built up a 5-0 lead before the Lions got on the scoreboard with one run in the sixth. Senior Jimmy Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) singled and went to second on a balk.  He advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Trailing 7-1 in the ninth, the Lions showed some mettle and applied pressure to the Prof pitchers. Senior Ed Zakrzewski (Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led off the inning with an infield single.  Freshman Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) followed with a double.  He went to third on a throwing error and Zakrzewski scored.  Sophomore Joe Dispoto (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) produced an RBI-ground out bring home Cocuzza, but the rally fell short.
.
Ruzich finished with a pair of hits as did junior Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North).

The Lions will look to bounce back tomorrow as they return home for an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, squaring off against Rutgers-Newark at 11:30 at George Ackerman Park.
