Clermont, FL... The impressive offensive numbers for The College of New Jersey softball team continue to build as the Lions won two more games on Thursday, reaching double figures in run in each game.
TCNJ used a big 11-run inning to rally past Wesleyan College 12-7 in the opening game of the day and then toppled Farmingdale State 14-2 to extend their modest winning streak to five straight. In each of those five wins, TCNJ has scored at least 10 runs and have plated a total of 62 runs during its streak.
The win puts the Lions at 7-1 with four games remaining in Florida.
TCNJ is in action on Friday with two more games facing Bethel University and Haverford College.
TCNJ 12, Wesleyan College 7
The Lions trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when they erupted for 11 runs as 15 batters stepped to the plate.
A host of players came through with clutch hits in the inning as freshman
Jamie Purcell (Nutley, NJ/Mount St. Dominic Academy) delivered a two run single that cut the deficit to 7-5, while classmate
Christine Desiderio (Babylon, NY/Babylon) followed with a run-scoring single to make it a one-run game.
Senior
Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) kept things going, putting the Lions in front for the first time with a two-run single and later in the inning senior
Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) doubled to bring in two more runs.
Having taken the lead with its big inning, TCNJ added another run in the sixth when Huttner drove in her third run of the game with a base hit.
Plenty of Lions got involved in the hit parade with Huttner hitting safely in all three official plate appearances and scored a pair of runs. Purcell and Desiderio each went 3-for-4, and Sogluizzo finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman pitcher
Ashtin Helmer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) earned her third win of the spring going 4.1 innings.
TCNJ 11, Farmingdale State 2
Like the first game of the day, the Lions once again used he the big inning to take over a game exploding for eight runs in the top of the seventh to blow open a 6-2 lead.
Freshman
Deanna Utter (Byram, NJ/Lenape Valley) ignited that inning with her first collegiate home run
Jenn Resnick (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) had a pinch-hit single to make it an 8-2 game.
The runs kept coming thanks to a three-run double by freshman
Steph Vuono (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern), who scored one batter later on a base hit by freshman
Jackie Oram (Lexington, MA/Lexington). Purcell plated the final two runs of the game with a single.
In the pitching circle for the Lions, freshman
Nicole Hroncich (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) picked up her second win as she allowed only a pair of unearned runs and fanned nine batters.
TCNJ blistered Farmingdale pitching for 16 hits as Huttner, Sogluizzo, Utter, Purcell, and Desiderio all finished with two hits apiece. In all, 11 different players recorded a hit.
