Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey baseball team plated 27 runs and allowed just four as they swept a doubleheader from Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon in George Ackerman Park.

A pair steady pitching performances coupled with relentless offensive production led by senior Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North) and sophomore Josh Limon (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) gave the Lions (6-7) their fifth and sixth victories of the season. They captured a 12-3 win in the opener and ran away with a 15-1 triumph in the second game. TCNJ has now won four straight contests.

The Mules, who entered the doubleheader riding a four-game winning streak, fell to 10-5 on the season.

Junior Brendan Kelly (Butler, NJ/Butler).notched his third win of the season in the first game. He limited Muhlenberg to just two runs (one earned) on seven hits and struck out seven. Freshman Steven Volpe (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) continues to impress as he won his second straight start. He tossed seven shutout innings, allowing six hits, and walking just one batter. Volpe has now thrown 16 scoreless innings at the onset of his collegiate career.

Scott Kelly had an outstanding day at the plate and a historic afternoon on the basepaths. He went 6-for-8 with four runs scored while driving in four. Kelly also stole four bases in the doubleheader. His second stolen base in the opening game was the 78th of his career, breaking the program record of 77 held by C.J. Rockhill '88. Kelly is now the all-time stolen base leader.

Game 1: TCNJ 12  Muhlenberg 3

TCNJ found itself down by two runs early, but scored 12 unanswered runs en route to a 12-3 victory in the opener. The offense erupted for 13 hits, while Brendan Kelly went eight innings for his third win of the season.

Limon continued to produce as he went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Scott Kelly scored three times and drove in two on three hits, and sophomore Michael Murray (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Mules opened up a 2-0 lead in the opening frame as the first four hitters reached base on three singles and a walk. Joe Vila singled to left to drive in a run and John Muha came around to score on a miscue to take a two-run lead.

Kelly avoided any further damage by striking out the next three hitters.

Scott Kelly led off the first for the Lions with a single to right-center. He moved over to second when Mark Mari (Bayonne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) walked and promptly stole third base. The throw from the catcher sailed into left field and Kelly dashed home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

TCNJ scored three more times in the second. Murray, sophomore Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), and center field Joe Dispoto (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) all singled in the inning. Kelly delivered a run-scoring single to right as the Lions surged to a 4-2 lead.

Limon doubled and came around to score on a base hit off the bat of Michael Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Curtis). In the meantime, Brendan Kelly was in complete command of the Mules line-up. After surrendering two runs in the first, he allowed just five baserunners over the next seven frames and

Scott Kelly led off the seventh inning with a walk. On the first pitch, he took off for second base and slid in safely for the 78th time in his career. Later in the inning, Limon singled to right field to score Kelly and stretch the lead to 6-2.

The Lions tacked on three in the seventh and four in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Freshman Joseph DiLorenzo (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) was touched for a run in the ninth as he closed out the Lions third straight win.

Vila and Muha both finished with two hits in the game. Rob Shannon suffered his first loss of the season on the mound.

Game 2: TCNJ 15  Muhlenberg 1

TCNJ's offense scored in six of eight frames, stroking a season-high 18 hits. A trio of freshmen got things rolling in the first. Back-to-back singles in the first by Mari and Pat Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) put runners in scoring position for Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley). He lined a two-out base hit to left field to stake the Lions to a 2-0 lead. A controversial call on a fielder's choice play kept the inning alive and sophomore Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) capitalized with a two-run single to right.

While TCNJ continued to increase its lead, the opening inning was all the run support Volpe would need. He retired 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced. It took the steely right-hander just 85 pitches to record 21 outs as he left the game after seven innings with a 12-0 lead.

The Lions tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth and scored a pair on a two-run double by Kelly in the sixth. They blew the game open in the seventh with four runs in the seventh and tallied three more on six hits in the eighth.

Cocuzza finished with three hits and three RBIs in the game. Turner also contributed two hits and scored three times, and freshman John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) delivered a pinch-hit two-run single in the win.
