Ewing, NJ … Three pitchers for William Paterson University held The College of New Jersey baseball team to one hit as they captured a 4-2 victory in George Ackerman Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Lefthander
Tim O'Shea tossed six and one-third innings of no-hit baseball before giving way to freshman
Adam Miller. Miller escaped a jam in the seventh and gave way to rookie closer
Frankie Colasante. He recorded the final six outs to register his third save and Pioneers 18
th win of the season.
Junior
Joe Dispoto (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the eighth inning.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of walks and a throwing error. Senior
Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North) and
sophomore Josh Limon (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) drew free passes and advanced on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) hit a hard ground ball to third that was fielded, but thrown away. Kelly and Limon hustled home for a two-run advantage.
The Pioneers got a run back in the second when
Rich Guillod hit a long home run to left-center field. It was his third round-tripper of the season.
In the fifth, WPU plated three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Ryan Gibbons walked and advanced to second on a balk.
A.J. Flores delivered a base hit to right-center to score Gibbons. With two on and two out, Guillod stroked an opposite-field double to clear the bases.
O'Shea pitched into the seventh and did not allow a hit. He did struggle with his control, however, as he walked nine in the game. He was lifted with one out in and bases loaded as Miller came on in relief to induce a pop-up and line out to center avert any damage.
The Lions (12-12, 4-3 NJAC) could not break through with a timely hit as they left ten on base in the game. On several occasions they had runners in scoring position with less than two outs, but the Pioneer pitchers and defense executed when they needed it most.
Senior
Robert Schneider (Township of Washington, NJ/Washington Twp.) pitched five innings and suffered the loss for TCNJ. Freshman
Michael Correa (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp) put forth a solid outing out of the bullpen, tossing four innings of scoreless relief.
WPU's Calasante surrendered a two-out infield single in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win. Guillod finished with three runs batted in, while shortstop Rob Pasternak finished with three hits. Flores and Mike Arnold also collected two hits each.
