Box Score
Ewing, NJ … Seven different pitchers limited The College of New Jersey offense to four hits as Penn State-Abington defeated the Lions 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon in George Ackerman Park.
TCNJ (13-15) struggled to score runs for the third straight game as the legion of Nittany Lion hurlers were effective as they kept the Lion hitters in check throughout the contest.
Charlie Huber registered the win, while
Kevin Faber garnered his fourth save of the season. It was the ninth straight win for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions (17-15) pushed a pair of unearned runs across home plate in the third.
Dustin Kology grounded a single to left and swiped second and third base.
Mark McCouch walked and stole second to put runners at second and third. An infield error allowed both runs to score for a 2-0 lead.
Right-handed pitcher
Tom Ditro performed well in his first start of the season. He held the Lions scoreless through the first four innings before giving way Huber. Huber surrendered a hit and a walk in the fifth, but picked off a runner to end the inning and escape the jam. He was credited with the win.
In the sixth, TCNJ cut the deficit in half. Sophomore
Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Senior
Michael Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) ripped a double just inside the left-field line and Cocuzza came all the way around to score to make it a 2-1 game.
Later in the inning, the Nittany Lions made a big defensive play to maintain their lead. With one out, freshman
Pat Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) singled up the middle, but centerfield
Dustin Kology fielded and fired home to get Murphy at the plate.
On the hill for the Lions, sophomore
John Spinapont (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) did an outstanding job in his collegiate appearance. He pitched six innings, scattered five hits, and allowed two unearned runs. Sophomore
David Rondesko (South River, NJ/South River) tossed three innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit and striking out a batter.
The Lions had the tying run on third base in the bottom of the ninth, but Faber induced a ground out to third to end the game and maintain the Nittany Lion winning streak. Koloyg and Ditro had two hits in the game.
TCNJ will have a day off before returning to New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Thursday. The Lions will host Montclair State University at 3:30 p.m. at George Ackerman Park.
