Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey suffered an 8-2 setback at the hands of Montclair State University in New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon.
The loss drops the Lions to 5-6 in the NJAC and into the sixth-place spot in the league standings. With seven games remaining on the conference schedule, TCNJ controls its destiny for post-season qualification.
The Red Hawks (12-12, 4-6-1 NJAC) put runners on base in every inning, scoring in six of their nine at bats. MSU received major production from the middle of its line-up. Catcher
Scott Gozzi had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, double, and five runs batted in. First baseman
Steven Nappe also had four hits and scored five runs in the win.
Sophomore
Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) collected two hits as did senior
Rob Vafiadou (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel). Senior
Michael Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) drove in both of TCNJ's runs.
The Red Hawks took a three-run lead in the third. After
Jose Padilla and
Connor Abreu walked, Nappe stroked a one-out double just inside the third baseline to plate Padilla. Glozzy singled up the middle to score two more runs.
The Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman Mark Mari (Bayonne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and Cocuzza hit back-to-back singles. Murphy then beat the right fielder with a shot to right to drive in Mari and cut the deficit two 3-1.
Montclair got the run back in the fourth and tacked on two more in the fifth when Glozzy knocked his second home run of the season over the left field fence.
Murphy hit a sacrifice fly for the Lions in the sixth, but that was all the run production they could manufacture on the day. Red Hawk lefthander
John Torregroza pitched eight strong innings and struck out three for his fourth mound victory of the season.
Senior
Robert Schneider (Township of Washington, NJ/Washington Twp.) pitched six innings for TCNJ and suffered the loss. Sophomore

Joseph DiLorenzo (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), and senior
